Generator

[1] A mechanism which generates or produces some substance, i.e., electric generator, acetylene generator.
[2] An electromagnetic device for producing direct current electricity. It was replaced by an alternator in the early '60s. Its problem was that a generator recharged the battery only at high speeds. The British call it a "dynamo".
